At Canadian Viewpoint, we wanted to explore how AI-assisted surveys could make open-ended feedback richer and more engaging. Using Forsta Surveys’ Open Assist feature, we ran a Halloween-themed experiment to see how a conversational AI assistant might help respondents share more thoughtful, expressive answers.
Even though our panel already provides high-quality feedback, we wanted to know – what happens when AI joins the conversation?
What We Uncover
- 🧠 AI-assisted answers were around 27% longer on average.
- ✍️ The storytelling question showed the largest improvement, with about 44% growth in word count.
- 👩💻Participants across most age groups (including 18–24 and 55–64) wrote richer responses when guided by AI.
- 🌎Responses from Quebec and the Prairie provinces showed lifts near 40%
- 💬The conversational AI prompts encouraged fuller sentences, fewer one-word replies, and better codability.
Why it matters for researchers
- Richer qualitative data with less moderation.
- More codable open-ends without extra effort.
- Higher engagement, especially among harder-to-engage audiences.
Whether you’re testing new product ideas, exploring customer sentiment, or running large-scale fieldwork, AI-assisted tools like Open Assist can help respondents articulate their thoughts more clearly and naturally.
